  2. Jumna, 160 km/100 mi SE of Delhi; population
  3. (1981) 747,318. A commercial and university
  4. centre, it was the capital of the Mogul
  5. empire 1527-1628, from which period dates the
  6. Taj Mahal. history Zahir ud-din Mohammed
  7. (known as `Babur'), the first great Mogul
  8. ruler, made Agra his capital in 1527. His
  9. grandson Akbar rebuilt the Red Fort of Salim
  10. Shah (1566), and is buried outside the city
  11. in the tomb at Sikandra. In the 17th century
  12. the buildings of Shah-Jehan made Agra one of
  13. the most beautiful cities in the world. The
  14. Taj Mahal, erected as a tomb for the
  15. emperor's wife Mumtaz Mahal, the emperor's
  16. wife Mumtaz Mahal, was completed in 1650.
  17. Agra's political importance dwindled from
  18. 1658, when Aurangzeb moved the capital back
  19. to Delhi. It was taken from the Mahrattas by
  20. Lord Lake in 1803.
